When we were little, my sister and I had a lavender kid-size wooden table with 4 chairs to play on. We left it behind when we moved to Hong Kong, but I distinctly remember the colour vividly because it reminded me of my favourite periwinkle crayon in our Crayola set. While every other girl I knew loved pink, my 5-year old defiant self refused to like it just because everyone else did. I decided purple would be my favourite colour instead, and all the lavenders and periwinkles in between.
This blueberry “nice cream,” a frozen banana blueberry dessert that tastes like soft serve ice cream, is a tribute to my purple loving younger self. She would’ve been ecstatic over the vibrant colour! A lovely hue just like that table and her My Little Pony’s hair.
I love how food takes me back and how even just the colour can remind me of a distant childhood memory. What are your favourite recipes that bring you back to your childhood? I’d love to hear them!

P.S. For some of my other favourite easy desserts, try the insanely decadent WHAM cake, a recipe from my sister Karla, Nene’s Amazing Blueberry Muffins, which have that crunchy sugary topping I love, and this Luscious Cheesecake recipe that takes me back to my Boston days every time.
Berry Purple Nice Cream
What you need:
3 large bananas, sliced and frozen
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
a splash of any dairy or non-dairy milk of your choice (optional)
What to do:
1. Blend until thick and creamy.
2. Serve immediately.
Tips:
- I don’t recommend refreezing this, it loses its creamy quality.
- You can also eat this as a smoothie bowl topped with your favourite nuts, fruits, seeds, etc. Add some honey to your nice cream if you prefer it sweeter.
- This is a great way to save all those bananas that have over ripened. Peel them, slice them into 2-inch slices, and then pop them into the freezer so that you can make this anytime.
